The clearing agent sends the BoL to the local shipping line, requesting the arrival time for the cargo. South African handling charges are also settled at this stage
The clearing agent then initiates the clearing process approximately 5 to 7 days before the cargo arrives, with documents being processed using a system connected to SARS.
Depending on the cargo destination, the clearing agent will process additional documentation, and settle duties and/or VAT fees on behalf of the client.
All the required documentation is submitted to the shipping line by the clearing agent, which facilitates the official release of the cargo from the port.
International cargo is either warehoused or delivered to the client’s premises. Local cargo undergoes a forwarding process, with the elected transporter picking up and delivering it to the next destination.
